Comment from Sharon Swain, Property Portfolio Manager Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square: "Sandton City confirms that an unauthorised protest took place on our premises on Sunday, 17 August, 2014.
"Our priority as Centre Management is to ensure the safety and security of everyone in the mall. As soon as it became evident that there was a gathering, we took the necessary precautions, including calling the SAPS to assist in monitoring and managing the situation. The protesters dispersed shortly after 16h00. Fortunately, nobody was injured during the protest and there was no damage to property.
"It should also be noted that the protest that took place on Sunday, 10 August, 2014 occurred without the authorisation of Sandton City.
"We support all the rights and principles enshrined in our Constitution and we do not condone discrimination or intimidation of any form. We respect everyone’s right to express their views. However, we reiterate that Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square are private properties and the safety of our shoppers and tenants is of utmost importance to us at all times. Accordingly, we advise that under no circumstances will we allow any future protests or unauthorised gatherings on our premises."
